Kalan Enterprises – What We Do
Kalan is a Coen-based organisation specializing in delivering best practise land management services to Traditional Owner land holder groups in the central Cape York area. Kalan commenced a Working On Country land management program with Southern Kaantju Traditional Owners in 2009. For the first four years it was conducted under the auspices of Balkanu. With the development of people and the establishment of strong governance and organisational capacity, Kalan Enterprises is now a well-managed corporation directed by an all indigenous board, responsible for managing, reporting and delivering its affairs.
Our work in central Cape York covers some 500,000 hectares extending across the lowlands and western slopes of the McIlwraith Ranges, the uplands of the McIlwraith Ranges, and surrounding rangelands that take in the upper reaches of the Archer River catchment and lands extending to the east coast of Cape York Peninsula, including more than 500,000 hectares of coastal waters within the Great Barrier Reef.
Our primary objectives are to implement land management services that create employment for local indigenous people, supports Traditional Owners to improve the health of their country and nurtures the cultural heritage of our region. Kalan also supports a variety of Coen Community Development projects, including supporting the local cultural dance group and the Coen rugby league team.
